About
The Rubettes

I Tony Waddington wrote a musical, which was not taken up, it did not come to fruition for one reason or another. But the songs from this musical titled “Jonny And The Juke Box” we extracted and decided to form a pop group around the songs. “Sugar Baby Love”, “Juke Box Jive”, “Tonight”, “I Can Do It” and “Saturday Night”.

We first approach a group called Shawaddywaddy we travelled to Newcastle to discuss the songs but they wanted to do them their way, and so we had are creative differences. We travelled back from Newcastle without a band on board, so we had to find another band.

We got together a number of professional musicians the result was The Rubettes, sadly Paul De Vinci decided that he wanted to go in different direction after recording “Sugar Baby Love” and “You Could Have Told Me”.

The name The Rubettes came from my friends car, he had a ruby red mini. He used to call the car “Ruby” and from this I created the name The Rubettes. We received a letter from Polydor in France, stating that the The Rubettes songs would never work and were totally unsuitable for the French market. This obviously turned out not to be the case. France has a huge fanbase for the songs by The Rubettes as does Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and many other countries.

After the third self-titled album “Rubettes” the band wanted to change musical direction and I had less creative contribution into the bands work and career.

I am after 50 years extremely proud of The Rubettes first three albums that I wrote and produced.
